In the spring of 2018, a dispute between two men in Jackson, Mississippi, culminated in a fatal encounter that would take years to see resolved. On the evening of April 27th, 36-year-old Damian Z. Harris was walking near the intersection of Colonial Drive and Terry Road when he was shot in the stomach. First responders found him at the scene and transported him to a local hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Initial reports from the Jackson Police Department indicated that Harris had been walking with another man who opened fire on him before fleeing the area on foot, heading south along Terry Road. For a time, the case lingered, another tragic instance of gun violence in the city. The investigation into the death of the male victim continued as law enforcement worked to identify a suspect in the shooting.
Years after the incident, a break in the case finally led to an arrest and the wheels of justice began to turn. Christopher Butler was identified as the individual responsible for Harris's death. Investigators learned that an ongoing dispute between the two men had escalated to the point of deadly violence. Surveillance footage from the area captured the moment Butler approached Harris and shot him. This evidence, combined with a witness who identified Butler as the shooter, proved crucial in building a case against him.
In June of 2024, the Hinds County District Attorney's Office announced that Christopher Butler had been tried and convicted by a jury for the first-degree murder of Damian Harris. Following the guilty verdict, Butler was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a definitive, albeit delayed, conclusion to the case.
