In the summer of 2015, a young man's life was cut short in Jackson, Mississippi, leaving a family to grapple with a future he would never see. Justin Williams, a 20-year-old father, was killed on June 21, 2015. His death was the result of a homicide. Just two days after his death, an acceptance letter to Jackson State Community College arrived, a poignant reminder of his aspirations to earn a business degree and build a better life for his family.
The investigation into Williams' death
led to the arrest of Dontavious Hendrix. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing gunshots and seeing Hendrix with a weapon in his hand. Hendrix had approached Williams and another man shortly before the shooting. After a month-long search, law enforcement apprehended Hendrix. Another individual, Mondarrius Miller, was also initially taken into custody but was later released.
Hendrix, who had a criminal record that included convictions for drug and weapon possession, was charged with second-degree murder for the death of Justin Williams. The legal process culminated in a guilty verdict, and Hendrix was sentenced to 25 years in prison without the possibility of parole. In addition to his prison sentence, he was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine and cover the funeral expenses. For Williams' family, the sentencing brought a measure of legal closure, though the emotional wounds of losing a son and father to a senseless act of violence remained. His mother, LaWanda Williams, has spoken of the profound and lasting impact his death has had on their family, particularly on his three young children.
