In the summer of 2020, the life of Lorenzo Kalthon Jr., a 29-year-old African American male, was tragically cut short. On the morning of July 2, a passerby made a grim discovery on Burns Road in the rural northern part of Columbus, Mississippi, finding Kalthon's body in a ditch. The Lowndes County Sheriff's Department was immediately notified, and upon arrival, deputies suspected foul play, launching what would become a complex homicide investigation. Kalthon, born on June 18, 1991, in Tampa, Florida, was a 2009 graduate of West Lowndes High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army. His untimely death left behind a wife, Shalondra Nicole Halthon, and three children.
The investigation into Kalthon's death proceeded swiftly, and within two weeks, authorities had a suspect in custody. Donta Terrell Kirby, then 37 years old, was arrested and subsequently charged with the murder of Lorenzo Kalthon Jr. While the authorities remained tight-lipped about the specific details and motive behind the killing, the case moved forward. In November 2020, a Lowndes County grand jury indicted Kirby on charges of first-degree murder and two counts of possession of a weapon by a felon, indicating that firearms were involved in the commission of the crime.
The legal proceedings culminated in February 2022, when a Lowndes County Circuit Court jury found Donta Kirby guilty on both the murder charge and the weapons possessions charges. The conviction brought a measure of justice for Lorenzo Kalthon Jr. and his family. Kirby was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder, along with two additional 10-year terms for the weapons charges. In an attempt to overturn the verdict, Kirby appealed his conviction, arguing ineffective assistance of counsel and insufficient evidence. However, in January 2024, the Mississippi Court of Appeals found no merit in his arguments and upheld the circuit court's decision, solidifying the life sentence and ensuring that Kirby would be held accountable for his actions on that fateful July day.
