On a Saturday morning in Columbus, Mississippi, the lives of several people were irrevocably changed by a violent domestic dispute that ended in a fatal shooting. Tymechi-Ali Lachil Spann, a 26-year-old Black male from Macon, passed away on December 1, 2018, succumbing to a gunshot wound during surgery at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle. The events leading to his death began unfolding earlier that morning at the Greentree Apartments in the eastern part of the city.
Authorities
were initially called to the scene of a three-vehicle accident near the apartment complex around 7:15 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered that one of the drivers, Tymechi-Ali Spann, was suffering from a gunshot wound. As this scene was being processed, a separate call came in from a woman at the Greentree Apartments, reporting that her ex-boyfriend had assaulted her and she required medical attention. Responding deputies quickly connected the two incidents. They found a woman with minor injuries who recounted a harrowing tale of domestic violence.
The woman, who shared a 10-month-old baby with Spann, told investigators that he had forcibly entered her apartment while another man, Stevie Moody, was present. An altercation ensued, during which Spann allegedly began to hit and choke her as she held their child. According to her account, she started to lose consciousness when Moody intervened. She heard Moody tell Spann to stop, followed by the sound of a gunshot. After being shot, Spann left the apartment, got into his car, and drove a few hundred feet before crashing into another vehicle, which then struck a third.
Following the investigation into the interconnected events of the domestic assault, shooting, and car crash, authorities arrested 26-year-old Stevie Moody. He was subsequently charged with manslaughter for the shooting death of Tymechi-Ali Spann. Moody was taken into custody and held at the Lowndes County Adult Detention Center. The woman Spann had assaulted was treated for her injuries at the scene and did not require hospitalization. Records also indicated she was arrested the same day on an unrelated charge of malicious mischief from a previous incident.
