On a Tuesday evening in Columbus, Mississippi, a family dispute escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 55-year-old Julius L. Wilson. The events unfolded on December 13, 2022, at a residence on Jess Lyons Road. A heated argument had broken out between 21-year-old Bobby Childs Jr. and a woman with whom he had been staying. Feeling threatened, the woman, who was Wilson's niece, called her uncle for help.
Julius Wilson, a Black male, arrived at the home to intervene, but his
presence only intensified the conflict. The argument between Wilson and Childs quickly spiraled out of control, culminating in gunfire. Wilson was struck in the face and chest. When deputies from the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene at approximately 9:40 p.m., they found him with fatal gunshot wounds.
Immediately after the shooting, Bobby Childs Jr. fled the scene in a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria, prompting a search by law enforcement. The following day, however, Childs turned himself in to the authorities. He was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Julius Wilson. His bond was later set at $500,000.
The case proceeded through the legal system, and in late August 2025, Bobby Childs Jr. faced a first-degree murder trial. After deliberations that stretched late into the night, the jury announced they were deadlocked. As a result, the judge declared a mistrial. A new trial date has not yet been scheduled. The community remembers Julius Wilson as a devoted family man and an active member of his church, Full Gospel Ministries, where his funeral was held.
