In Aberdeen, Mississippi, a tragic incident cut short the life of 26-year-old Robert “Mouse” Jackson on November 11, 2020. Jackson, a male, died from a gunshot wound in what was described by authorities as a 'freak accident' that nevertheless resulted in a fatality. The event unfolded at the Southview Apartments, where Jackson was with his new roommate.
The individual involved was 18-year-old Amiyah Verner, who had recently moved in with Jackson. According to police, Verner and Jackson were playing with a gun they believed to be unloaded. Verner told investigators she did not understand how the gun worked and thought it was safe because the magazine had been removed. However, a single bullet remained in the chamber. When the gun was handled, it discharged, fatally wounding Jackson before paramedics could arrive.
Following the shooting, Amiyah Verner of Hamilton was arrested and charged with manslaughter. Aberdeen Police Chief Henry Randle commented on the tragic nature of the event, stating it was a sad situation for both families involved and highlighted the importance of proper gun safety and knowledge. Verner was taken to the Monroe County jail, and an autopsy was ordered for Jackson as the investigation continued.
