Following the shooting, Smith attempted to conceal his crime by
transporting Jackson's body to a remote location in Leake County. In Vicksburg, her family grew increasingly worried when they could not contact her, prompting them to report her as a missing person. Their fears were amplified when the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation issued a Silver Alert, signaling a public appeal for information regarding her whereabouts. For weeks, a desperate search ensued, with her loved ones holding out hope for her safe return.
The search came to a devastating conclusion in July when Smith, under questioning, confessed to killing Jackson. He then led investigators to the location where he had disposed of her remains.
