On an early Sunday morning in May 2018, 21-year-old Black man Cortez Denzel Hardy was inside a small home in the 1300 block of South Street in Vicksburg, Mississippi, when the quiet before dawn was broken by gunfire. Just before 4:30 a.m., shots were fired from outside into the residence, riddling the house and striking Cortez multiple times. When Vicksburg police officers arrived, they found him inside with several gunshot wounds, evidence that the shooters had targeted the home rather than
firing at random. Emergency responders rushed him to Merit Health River Region Medical Center, where doctors tried to save him, but he died later that Sunday afternoon from his injuries.
In the days that followed, the shooting weighed heavily on the South Street neighborhood. Police noted that the house had clearly been shot into and publicly stated that they believed at least two shooters were involved, suggesting a coordinated attack rather than a single impulsive act. Investigators appealed to the community for help, asking anyone who might have seen or heard something that morning to come forward. The lack of immediate arrests meant that, for nearly a year, Cortez’s killing remained an open wound in Vicksburg, with family and friends left to grieve while they waited for answers.

After his death, he was laid to rest at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg, his grave one more quiet marker of a life ended by gunfire.
Nearly a year after the shooting, there was a breakthrough. In late April 2019, Vicksburg police announced the arrest of 26-year-old Conti Lashun Tillis. He was taken into custody and charged with homicide in connection with Cortez’s death, as well as with shooting into an occupied dwelling. According to investigators, Tillis was accused of firing multiple shots into the South Street home on May 6, 2018, while Cortez was inside, the attack that ultimately led to the young man’s death at the hospital later that day.
The arrest also tied Tillis to another violent incident. Police said he was suspected of firing multiple shots at a different home on Wabash Avenue a week later, on May 13, 2018, around the same early-morning hour. No one was injured in that second shooting, but the parallels in timing and method linked the two cases in investigators’ minds. With those allegations, Tillis faced not only the homicide charge related to Cortez’s killing but also an additional charge of shooting into an occupied building. He was set to be arraigned in Vicksburg Municipal Court, marking the first time someone formally stood accused of taking Cortez Hardy’s life.
