In the spring of 2018, the life of 45-year-old Latonya Love-Campbell was tragically cut short in Vicksburg, Mississippi. On the evening of Saturday, April 14th, Love-Campbell was found deceased next door to her home on Elizabeth Circle. An autopsy later confirmed that she had died from gunshot wounds. The news of her violent death sent ripples of grief and shock through her community, where she was known as a kind and sweet person, often seen walking to the store with her children.
The investigation into her death quickly focused on 56-year-old Darrell Lepercy Green, with whom Love-Campbell had recently ended a romantic relationship. According to police reports and witness accounts, Green had been waiting for Love-Campbell at her home on the night of the incident. An argument broke out between the two, which tragically escalated to the point of Green shooting her. One neighbor recounted seeing the suspect drop Love-Campbell off in front of her house before hearing gunshots. The witness stated that the assailant shot her once, then turned around and shot her again before driving away.
The day after the shooting, Darrell Lepercy Green was apprehended by the Vicksburg Police Department and officially charged with murder. The motive for the crime was believed to be a disagreement stemming from their recent breakup.
In January 2020, Darrell Green pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. For the murder conviction, he was sentenced to thirty years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with twenty-five of those years to be served. He also received a concurrent sentence for the firearm charge. Subsequent appeals filed by Green for post-conviction relief were dismissed by the courts.
