In the summer of 2021, a young Black man named Malik Vallarie, aged 21, lost his life in Vicksburg, Mississippi. On the afternoon of June 14th, an altercation on a basketball court in the Waltersville area escalated to gunfire. Vallarie was fatally shot and was later found in a wooded area behind the City of Vicksburg Animal Shelter, where he had collapsed after attempting to flee the scene.
