In the summer of 2021, a young Black man named Malik Vallarie, aged 21, lost his life in Vicksburg, Mississippi. On the afternoon of June 14th, an altercation on a basketball court in the Waltersville area escalated to gunfire. Vallarie was fatally shot and was later found in a wooded area behind the City of Vicksburg Animal Shelter, where he had collapsed after attempting to flee the scene. He was pronounced dead when authorities arrived.
The Vicksburg Police Department quickly launched an investigation, interviewing several witnesses whose statements led to the apprehension of two suspects.
The investigation resulted in the arrests of 29-year-old Laqesha Davis and 15-year-old Damarion Reed, both residents of Vicksburg. They were both charged with murder in connection with Vallarie's death. Davis faced an additional charge of instructing a juvenile to commit a felony. The motive for the shooting was alleged to be retaliation for an incident that had occurred days prior, in which Vallarie had reportedly assaulted Reed's mother. This prior event set the stage for the tragic confrontation on the basketball court.
Damarion Reed, who was 17 at the time of his trial, was the first to face a jury. During the proceedings, the prosecution presented witnesses who identified Reed as the shooter. However, Reed's defense attorney argued that the true perpetrator was Laqesha Davis, a claim supported by Reed's own testimony. The defense also pointed to inconsistencies in the witness testimonies and presented video evidence that they argued implicated Davis. After a trial that lasted several days, the jury deliberated for a short period before returning a verdict of not guilty, acquitting Reed of the murder charge.
Following Reed's acquittal, Laqesha Davis's legal journey took a different course. Initially facing a murder charge, she later entered into a plea agreement. Davis pleaded guilty to the lesser felony charge of directing a child to commit a felony. After her guilty plea, she was sentenced to serve 10 years in prison for her role in the events that led to the death of Malik Vallarie.
