In the warm summer night of July 24, 2021, the life of 22-year-old Robben Wilson was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire on Maynard Street in Tupelo, Mississippi. He, along with two friends, 21-year-old Jessica Pannell and 21-year-old Norahs Coleman, were attending a party when they became the victims of a fatal shooting. The incident, which unfolded near midnight, marked a grim day in the city's history, leaving the community in shock and mourning the loss of three young lives.
Robben was a well-regarded young man with a promising future. He was an avid basketball player, known for his skill as a shooting guard, and had been a key player in leading Shannon High School to a championship. His passion for the sport was matched by his commitment to his community, where he was actively involved with the Tupelo Police Athletic League. With aspirations of becoming a barber, he was set to begin his studies just days after his life was taken. Remembered for his big personality and constant smile, his death left a profound void in the lives of his family and friends.
The investigation into the triple homicide led to the swift arrests of several suspects. Within days of the shooting, Tupelo police apprehended Javion Clifton and Shamar Carroll. Shortly after, U.S. Marshals located and arrested a third suspect, Taquon Garth, in Jackson, Mississippi. The fourth and final suspect, Jaylen Wells, who was 17 at the time of the incident, was captured in Albany, New York, in December 2021 after a period of evading law enforcement. All four individuals were initially charged with three counts of capital murder.
In September 2023, two of the accused, Shamar Carroll, then 19, and Javion Clifton, also 19, entered into plea agreements. Carroll pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to capital murder and was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with five years suspended. Clifton pleaded guilty to three counts of culpable negligent manslaughter and received three consecutive 20-year sentences, with the latter two suspended. As part of their plea deals, both Carroll and Clifton agreed to testify against the remaining two defendants, Jaylen Antwan Wells and Taquon Arnez Garth, who are still awaiting trial on capital murder charges.
