In the early morning hours of May 28, 2022, a domestic dispute at the Auburn Apartments in Tupelo, Mississippi, escalated into a fatal shooting, claiming the life of 21-year-old Kavon Usher. Lee County Sheriff's deputies responded to a shots fired call around 5 a.m. and discovered Usher deceased from a gunshot wound inside the apartment he shared with his girlfriend.
The initial investigation led to his girlfriend being taken into custody as a person of interest.
She was questioned and subsequently released while investigators continued to gather and analyze evidence, including ballistics, phone records, and her statement. Authorities noted at the time that there were no prior records of domestic disturbances involving the couple.
A few days later, on June 1, 2022, the Lee County Sheriff's Department arrested 20-year-old Rachel S. Brown and charged her with the second-degree murder of her boyfriend, Kavon Usher. Investigators stated that while Brown had cooperated with them, inconsistencies between her account of the events and the physical evidence discovered at the scene led to her arrest. According to the sheriff, both Usher and Brown were the only individuals inside the apartment when the shooting occurred. A 9-millimeter handgun was recovered from the scene. Following her arrest, Brown's bond was set at $750,000.
