In a tragic turn of events stemming from a prearranged gun exchange, 19-year-old Terrell Peete of St. Louis was fatally shot on May 22, 2024. The incident unfolded in a parking lot near the St. Charles Convention Center, leaving two other individuals wounded. Peete was identified as the driver of a vehicle involved in what authorities describe as a gun deal that went awry.
According to charging documents, the confrontation began when Peete's group and another group, including Gabriel
Patterson, met to trade firearms. After Patterson handed over his weapon, Peete’s group allegedly attempted to flee with it. In response, Patterson admitted to firing multiple shots into the departing vehicle. The car, with Peete behind the wheel, ultimately crashed into a tree.
Law enforcement arrived at the scene around 8 p.m. to find the crashed vehicle and multiple gunshot victims. Witnesses at the scene directed police to a nearby home where Patterson and another individual had fled, leading to their arrest. Surveillance footage also captured the shooting.
Prosecutors have since charged both Gabriel Patterson and Keonta Hardin, who was in the back seat of Peete's vehicle, with second-degree murder in connection with Peete's death. Hardin, who was shot in the arm during the incident, was taken into police custody after receiving medical treatment. Patterson faces additional charges, including five counts of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon, while Hardin also faces a charge of stealing a firearm.
