In a heroic act to save his sister, 20-year-old Fithawi Asfaha Gebremedhin was shot and killed on June 12, 2023, at the Metro on Fifth apartment complex in Saint-Charles, Missouri. Gebremedhin was a Black male. The tragic events unfolded at approximately 11 p.m. when Gebremedhin's 22-year-old sister arrived at their apartment and was confronted by an armed individual.
As the gunman began to shoot, the young woman fled into her apartment.
Gebremedhin held the door shut in an attempt to protect her, but the assailant fired multiple rounds through the door, striking him several times in the torso. His sister sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to her right leg. Both were transported to a local hospital, where Fithawi Gebremedhin was pronounced dead.
Authorities with the St. Charles Police Department believe the attack was targeted. In the course of their investigation, a 21-year-old man was taken into custody in University City for questioning. However, he was later released, and no charges have been filed in the case.
The investigation into the death of Fithawi Asfaha Gebremedhin remains ongoing, and as of now, no arrests have been made. Police are urging anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward and contact the St. Charles Police Department.
