In the summer of 2021, a party on Maynard Street in Tupelo, Mississippi, turned into a scene of tragedy, forever altering the lives of three families. Among the victims was 21-year-old Norahs Coleman, a male who was gunned down in a violent outburst that also claimed the lives of 21-year-old Jessica Pannell and 22-year-old Robben Wilson. The shooting, which occurred late on the night of July 24th, sent shockwaves through the community and prompted a determined investigation by law
enforcement.
The Tupelo Police Department, faced with a complex triple homicide, began the arduous task of piecing together the events of that fatal night. Their investigation led them to identify four individuals as suspects in the horrific crime. Within days of the shooting, two of the suspects, Javion Clifton and Shamar Carroll, were taken into custody by Tupelo police. A third suspect, Taquon Garth, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Jackson, Mississippi. The fourth and final suspect, Jaylen Wells, who was 17 at the time of the incident, managed to evade capture for a period, leading authorities on a multi-state manhunt. He was eventually located and arrested in Albany, New York, where he had been hiding and reportedly used a false name in an attempt to avoid being caught. All four suspects were subsequently charged with three counts of capital murder.
As the legal process unfolded, the cases against two of the accused reached a resolution. Shamar Carroll entered a guilty plea to a lesser charge of accessory after the fact to capital murder. As a result, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with five of those years suspended. Javion Clifton also reached a plea agreement, pleading guilty to three counts of culpable negligent manslaughter. He received a 20-year sentence for each count, with the sentences to be served consecutively. As part of their plea deals, both Carroll and Clifton agreed to testify against the remaining two defendants, Jaylen Antwan Wells and Taquon Arnez Garth. Wells and Garth were still awaiting trial on the initial capital murder charges.
