In the late summer of 2021, amidst the rising floodwaters that enveloped the coastal community of Pearlington, Mississippi, a grim scene unfolded within a home on Kelly Road. George Hobart Shaw, a 65-year-old male, was shot and killed on August 30, 2021. The retired oceanographer, known for his quick wit and love for his cats, was a well-traveled individual who had settled back into his Gulf Coast roots.
The circumstances of Shaw's death were both tragic and violent.
He was inside his elevated home, which was surrounded by floodwaters, when he was fatally shot. The authorities were alerted to the shooting by a 911 call. When Hancock County sheriff's deputies arrived at the inundated residence, they were met by the suspected shooter.
The individual suspected of killing Shaw was his 80-year-old roommate, Martin Luther “Caption” Bowman III. Upon their arrival, deputies encountered Bowman at the scene of the crime. The confrontation that ensued resulted in deputies fatally shooting Bowman. Both men were found deceased inside the home.
Subsequent autopsies confirmed that both George Hobart Shaw and Martin Luther Bowman died from gunshot wounds. With the suspect deceased at the scene, the investigation into Shaw's murder concluded without an arrest. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation was tasked with conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting of Bowman.
