In the early morning hours of November 19, 2023, the life of 22-year-old Shawn Williams III was tragically cut short in his hometown of McComb, Mississippi. Williams, a Black male, was on C.C. Bryant Street in the Baertown neighborhood when he was struck by multiple gunshots. He was rushed to Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The initial investigation into the shooting left police searching for suspects and a motive.
As the community mourned the loss of the young man, a shadow of violence loomed. During a gathering following Williams' funeral on December 2, a separate shooting erupted at a gas station across the street from the repast. Five people were wounded in this incident, further unsettling a community already grieving. While authorities did not immediately confirm a direct link between the two shootings, the proximity in time and location raised concerns.
The investigation into Williams' death led law enforcement across state lines. A month after the fatal shooting, on December 19, 45-year-old Chauncey Dyson was apprehended by FBI agents in Lancaster, Texas. Dyson was identified as the primary suspect in Williams' murder. In January 2024, he was extradited back to Mississippi to face a charge of first-degree murder. During court proceedings, it was revealed that the deadly encounter allegedly stemmed from a dispute over a dice game. Dyson was subsequently held on a $1 million bond as he awaited trial for his alleged role in the death of Shawn Williams III.
