On October 23, 2021, authorities in Edwards, Mississippi, were called to a residence on Staple Street following reports of a violent altercation. Upon arrival, officers discovered the lifeless body of a 44-year-old Black male, Octavius Lamar Zachary, lying in a front yard. Law enforcement officials determined that he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds which proved fatal.
Witnesses at the scene reported that prior to the shooting, Zachary had been engaged in a heated verbal argument with an unidentified man, a confrontation that ultimately escalated into deadly violence.
The Edwards Police Department launched a homicide investigation to identify those responsible for the shooting. Through witness statements and further inquiry, detectives learned that the initial argument had taken place between Zachary and a cousin of the primary suspect. Investigators clarified that while this dispute precipitated the violence, the cousin was not the individual who pulled the trigger and was not charged in connection with the crime. The investigation pointed instead to another individual who allegedly intervened with lethal force.
By early November 2021, police announced significant breaks in the case, resulting in the arrest of three suspects. Gervarian Heard was taken into custody and charged with murder for the shooting death of Zachary. Two other men, Adarius Gray and Derrick Sharp, were also arrested and faced charges of accessory to murder after the fact and making false statements to law enforcement, allegedly for their roles in hindering the investigation or assisting the primary suspect following the incident.
