On August 19, 2022, Laura Lumpkin, a 66-year-old female, was fatally shot in her Jackson, Mississippi, home. Police responded to a call about a deceased individual at 124 Barbara Avenue. Upon arrival, they encountered Robert Lumpkin, his hands in the air, exiting the residence. Inside, they discovered his wife, Laura Lumpkin, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the neck and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Robert Lumpkin was taken into custody that same night. The Hinds County District Attorney's office prosecuted the case against the 71-year-old, who was identified as a habitual offender. A jury convicted Robert Lumpkin of manslaughter for the killing of his wife and for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm.
Following his conviction, Robert Lumpkin faced a mandatory sentence of 20 years for the manslaughter charge and an additional 10 years for the firearm possession charge. The District Attorney stated that the prosecution aimed to bring a sense of closure to Laura Lumpkin's family and hold her husband accountable for the deadly act of domestic violence.
