In Yazoo County, Mississippi, a dispute between children over a bicycle escalated into a fatal encounter for 44-year-old James Porter, a Black male. The incident, which occurred on September 5, 2022, began when Porter accused the son of 37-year-old Antonio Barton of stealing his son's bike. This accusation led to a heated confrontation between the two men on Vaughan Road.
The argument intensified, and at one point, Porter allegedly slapped Barton.
In response to being struck, Barton is said to have pulled out a firearm and shot Porter in the chest. The gunshot wound proved to be fatal, and James Porter was pronounced dead at the scene by the Yazoo County Coroner at approximately 3:07 p.m.
Following the shooting, law enforcement began a search for Antonio Barton. With assistance from the Madison County Sheriff's Office, authorities located and arrested Barton at his grandmother's residence. He was subsequently charged with murder and booked into the Yazoo County Regional Jail. The case is currently moving through the legal system.
