In what should have been a joyous gathering, a family reunion in Canton, Mississippi, turned into a scene of unimaginable horror on June 25, 2023. On that day, 33-year-old Jordan Maurice Deere, a Black/African American male, was tragically killed in a mass shooting at the Anderson Masonic Lodge. The event, which was the final day of a weekend-long family reunion, was shattered by the unexpected and senseless violence that erupted.

A man, later identified as 32-year-old George Alton Smith, entered the event hall and began firing indiscriminately at the attendees. Witnesses reported that Smith, a stranger to the family with no known connections to anyone at the reunion or in the Canton area, reloaded his firearm multiple times as he carried out the attack. Amid the chaos, many of the men, women, and children present managed to escape the barrage of gunfire by fleeing the building and seeking refuge in a nearby residential neighborhood.

Law enforcement officers from the Canton Police Department were dispatched to the scene following reports of multiple gunshot victims. Upon their arrival, they discovered that Jordan Deere had been fatally shot. Three other individuals, Daryl Dortch, Densie Page, and James Williams, also sustained gunshot wounds. Dortch was airlifted to a medical center for treatment but tragically succumbed to complications from his injuries months later, on February 14, 2024.

As he attempted to leave the scene in his vehicle, George Alton Smith was quickly apprehended by police. The evidence recovered from the crime scene, including shell casings, was a match to the gun and ammunition found in Smith's truck at the time of his arrest. In the face of the overwhelming evidence against him, Smith pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and aggravated assault charges in Madison County Circuit Court on October 10, 2024. He was subsequently sentenced to serve 40 years in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, with no possibility of parole. The motive for this devastating and random act of violence remains unknown to investigators and the grieving families.
