In the quiet, early morning hours of September 19, 2022, the life of 15-year-old Jeremiah Howard Jr. was tragically cut short in Port Gibson, Mississippi. A 10th-grade student at Port Gibson High School, Jeremiah, who was affectionately known as “Scooby” or “Mane, Mane” to his loved ones, was described as a handsome, quiet, and caring young man.
The events of that fateful morning unfolded near the grounds of his high school, where what began as a vehicle chase escalated into a fatal act of violence. Multiple gunshots were fired, and Jeremiah was struck. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The incident was investigated as a drive-by shooting.
In the aftermath of the shooting, the Claiborne County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation that led to the identification and arrest of several suspects. Four individuals, Maliek Gardner, 21, Justin Thomas, 19, Te'Len Guinn, 18, and Ajavion Anderson, 21, were taken into custody. Each of them faced serious charges, including one count of murder and one count of attempted murder, indicating that another individual was also targeted in the attack.
The investigation continued, and in February of the following year, a fifth suspect was apprehended. Dontrell Rowan, 20, of Jackson, was arrested and charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit murder in connection with Jeremiah's death. Authorities stated at the time of Rowan's arrest that the investigation was ongoing and that they anticipated more arrests would follow. The case has been an active point of focus for law enforcement as they work to bring all those responsible for the young man's death to justice.
