In the early morning hours of April 22, 1993, a routine traffic stop in the 5800 block of North Cincinnati Avenue in Tulsa, Oklahoma, turned tragic. Officer Constantine George 'Gus' Spanos, a male who had been with the Tulsa Police Department for a year and a half, pulled over a vehicle. Not long after, a backup officer arrived to find Officer Spanos lying next to his patrol car with a gunshot wound to the head.
Emergency services transported him to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal. Officer Spanos died the following day, on April 23, 1993. The suspect in the shooting fled the state in an attempt to evade capture. However, law enforcement was successful in their pursuit and apprehended the individual.
The suspect was subsequently convicted of the murder of Officer Spanos and received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. Years later, the convicted individual has continued to maintain his innocence, seeking further DNA testing in an effort to overturn the verdict. These requests have been denied, with the court ruling that there was not enough evidence to suggest that further testing would have changed the outcome of the trial.
