On Mother's Day, May 8, 1994, a night of socializing turned tragic for 19-year-old Mario Valentino 'Tino' Brooks. The young man from Duncan, Oklahoma, was at the Family Barbecue Social Club just outside of Tatums with his older brother, Corey. A festive atmosphere descended into chaos when a fight broke out. The altercation escalated horrifically when a gun was drawn and fired into the crowd.
In the ensuing pandemonium, four individuals were injured, but it was Tino who suffered a fatal gunshot wound to his abdomen.
His brother and friends desperately tried to save him, rushing him to Healdton Hospital. Corey administered CPR throughout the frantic journey, but Tino's injuries were too severe. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, leaving his family, including a three-year-old son, devastated. Tino was known for his love of laughter and pulling pranks, a celebrated athlete at Duncan High School who was well-liked by his peers.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, investigators identified three male suspects, ranging in age from 21 to 24. However, no charges were ever filed against them. Law enforcement officials have stated that a lack of cooperation from witnesses present at the club that night significantly hampered the investigation, leaving the case to grow cold for many years. Despite the passage of time, Tino's family has continued to seek justice. In 2019, a glimmer of hope appeared when a new tip was reported to the Carter County Sheriff's Office, though it has not yet led to any arrests.
