Andrew, a Caucasian male, was at his neighbor's house when the incident that led to his death occurred. He was a student at Chickasha Public Schools and was about to start his freshman year of high school. Those who knew him described him as an outgoing and confident young man who enjoyed joking, playing video games, and helping his grandparents.
He had moved to Chickasha to live with his great-grandparents.
On the afternoon of his death, Andrew was visiting his 31-year-old neighbor, Boone Buben. At approximately 1:27 PM, Andrew was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. Initially, Buben told authorities that the firearm had discharged accidentally while he was putting it away. The narrative of an accidental discharge was the initial account of the events that transpired.
The investigation into Andrew's death continued, and on June 12, 2017, Boone Buben underwent a polygraph test. Following the test, his account of the events changed. Buben admitted to investigators that he had pointed the pistol at Andrew and pulled the trigger, believing the weapon was unloaded. He confessed that his initial story about the gun accidentally discharging was a lie, which he told out of fear and to make himself feel better about the situation. Following this confession, the district attorney filed a second-degree manslaughter charge against Buben. If he were to be convicted, the potential prison sentence he faced was between two and four years.
