On a summer afternoon in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the life of Richard Jerald Parker, a 57-year-old Black/African American man, was tragically cut short. On July 12, 2014, Parker was discovered shot to death inside his SUV in the parking lot of the Tonight Inn and Suites. The grim discovery was made around 2:20 p.m. after a woman flagged down a passing patrol officer to report the shooting.
Parker, a beloved father and fiancé, was found behind the wheel, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
The initial investigation quickly pointed to a small, gold-colored Ford vehicle with tinted windows being involved in the incident. This crucial piece of information sparked a multi-agency investigation that brought together the Tulsa Police Department's homicide, narcotics, and organized gang units, as well as crime analysts and officers from the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. Their collaborative efforts soon identified a primary suspect: Kordarius Scott. Scott, who was on interstate parole from Kansas at the time, was known to be acquainted with Parker.
Just three days after the fatal shooting, on July 15, 2014, authorities located a gold Ford Fusion matching the description provided by witnesses. Surveillance teams tracked the vehicle to a McDonald's restaurant, where they apprehended Kordarius Scott without incident. Investigators determined that a chance meeting between Scott and Parker at the motel had escalated into the deadly encounter. While the precise sequence of events leading to the shooting remains somewhat unclear, Scott was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with Richard Parker's death, bringing a swift arrest in a case that had suddenly and violently ended a man's life.
