In the spring of 2009, just days before he was set to graduate from high school, the life of 18-year-old Jason Trent was tragically cut short. An African-American male, Jason was at a home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the early morning hours where a gathering of friends were playing dominoes. The atmosphere of camaraderie was shattered at approximately 12:30 a.m.
when an unfamiliar voice called out from the front door.
Someone at the residence yelled, "hey bro," prompting Jason to go and see who was there. As he approached the door, a volley of gunfire erupted, tearing through the entrance of the house. Jason was struck and fatally wounded. The sudden violence left a scene of chaos and disbelief, with about twenty people scattering in the immediate aftermath. When police arrived at the house, located at North Garrison and East 41st Place, they found a community in shock and a family’s worst nightmare realized.
In the initial stages of the investigation, Tulsa police arrested three men in connection with the shooting on the very same night. However, a pervasive "no snitch" mentality within the neighborhood created a wall of silence that hampered the investigation. Without sufficient evidence to proceed, no formal charges were ever filed against the suspects, and they were subsequently released.
