On a spring evening in Oklahoma City, the life of 19-year-old Hispanic male Jose Rubio was tragically cut short. On April 5, 2016, Rubio was found shot to death in the driver's seat of a car in a southwest neighborhood. The vehicle had rolled to a stop against a building, and when emergency responders arrived, they discovered Rubio had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his chest.
The investigation into the homicide led Oklahoma City police to a suspect, Demetrius "Meat" Athletic Gaines.
According to court documents, Rubio and a friend had gone to an apartment complex to sell marijuana to Gaines. An argument reportedly broke out between Rubio and Gaines, escalating to the point where Gaines allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Rubio. The friend who was with Rubio at the time of the shooting later identified Gaines as the shooter from a photo lineup.
Following the investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for Demetrius Gaines on a first-degree murder complaint. He was taken into custody by the Oklahoma City Police Department's gang and violent crimes units. Gaines was subsequently booked into the Oklahoma County jail, facing charges for his alleged role in the death of Jose Rubio. The incident marked another tragic loss of a young life to gun violence in the city.
