On the night of Friday, October 18, 2024, the sound of gunfire shattered the evening quiet at an apartment complex in northwest Oklahoma City. Police were dispatched around 10:00 p.m. to the property located at 1917 N. Minnie Lane, near the intersection of Northwest 19th Street and Meridian Avenue. Upon their arrival, they discovered a grim scene in the parking lot.
There, officers found the body of 45-year-old Michael Joseph Waters, a White male, who had been fatally shot.
The death of Waters was quickly classified as the city's 72nd homicide of the year. As investigators began to piece together the events of that night, they were able to identify a person of interest in the shooting.
Following leads developed during their investigation, authorities arrested 26-year-old Joseph Michael Stewart. Stewart was taken into custody and booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center. He faces complaints of first-degree murder and destroying evidence in connection with the death of Michael Waters. While an arrest has been made, the motive for the deadly shooting has not been made clear.
