In the late summer of 2016, a tragic series of events unfolded in East Tulsa, Oklahoma, culminating in the death of 17-year-old Marquis Mi'Tayo Mullins. A Black male and a student at East Central High School, his life was cut short on August 23rd as a result of a violent encounter between two groups. The incident began when Mullins, accompanied by Chrishun Smith and another juvenile, armed themselves and set out in a silver SUV to confront individuals they believed had previously assaulted one
of their own.
Upon locating the other group, Smith and the juvenile with him opened fire, though their shots missed their intended targets. As their SUV sped away from the scene, retaliatory shots were fired in their direction. One of these bullets found its way to the back of the vehicle, striking Mullins. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to a fatal bullet wound to his back. The ensuing investigation painted a complex picture of provocation and retaliation that led to the teenager's untimely death.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement officials began to piece together the events of that fateful day. Their investigation led to the arrests of Chrishun Smith and the other juvenile who were with Mullins. They were both charged with murder under the state's felony murder law, which holds individuals responsible for a death that occurs during the commission of a felony, even if they did not directly cause the death. The legal proceedings also extended to Marquis's own brother, Deonta Mullins, who was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident and was apprehended after a standoff with the Tulsa Fugitive Task Force in November of that year.
The case saw further developments as the individuals involved faced the consequences of their actions. Chrishun Smith eventually pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder and was handed a 25-year prison sentence. The investigation also identified another individual, Roderick Harbin, as having fired at the SUV, with multiple shell casings recovered from his front yard. The tragic story of Marquis Mullins's death serves as a stark reminder of the devastating and far-reaching impact of gun violence and the cyclical nature of retaliatory actions.
