In the autumn of 2017, the city of Tulsa, Oklahoma, was marked by a tragedy that cut short the life of a young man. Eighteen-year-old Tyson Teague, a Black male, was fatally wounded on the night of October 23rd. The incident, which unfolded in the 4900 block of North Boston, began with a heated argument that quickly spiraled into a physical fight. The altercation took a deadly turn when gunshots rang out, shattering the evening quiet.
When police responded to calls reporting the fight and gunfire, they discovered Teague's body in the street.
The violence of that night was not limited to a single victim. In the immediate aftermath, another individual was found at Martin Luther King Boulevard and 49th Street North suffering from a gunshot wound to the face. A third victim, a woman, made her own way to a Tulsa hospital with a gunshot wound to her shoulder, a testament to the chaos that had erupted. Teague's death was recorded as the 71st homicide in Tulsa for that year, a grim statistic for the city.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly. Within hours of the incident, detectives from the Tulsa Homicide Unit had pieced together enough evidence from the crime scene and witness interviews to identify a suspect. On October 24, 2017, thirty-year-old Raymond Rivera was arrested in connection with the death of Tyson Teague. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and assault and battery with a deadly weapon, bringing a swift, if somber, development to a case that had so violently ended a young life.
