Benjamin Montgomery, a 22-year-old White male, tragically lost his life on the night of October 10, 2019, in a violent act at a south Tulsa, Oklahoma apartment complex. The incident unfolded when two men attempted to rob another man in the parking lot of the complex. After striking the initial victim on the head with a gun, they tried to force him to his apartment for more money.
When the robbery victim couldn't find his keys, the assailants turned their attention to a nearby apartment where a party was taking place.
Benjamin, who was inside the second apartment, attempted to intervene and prevent the armed intruders from entering. In a heroic act to protect others, he was shot by one of the suspects. Emergency services were called to the scene, and he was rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day, October 11, 2019. Another individual was also injured during the incident.
For years, the case remained unsolved, with no suspects publicly identified, leaving a painful void for his family and friends. The Tulsa Police Department continued their investigation, and the case was eventually moved to their cold case unit. The dedication of the investigators finally paid off in August of 2025, when a significant breakthrough led to an arrest in connection with Benjamin's murder. After nearly six years of uncertainty, the efforts of law enforcement brought a renewed sense of hope for justice for Benjamin and all who knew him.
