In the late summer evening of August 29, 2021, the life of 15-year-old Steven Garland Sinclair Jr., a Black male from Tulsa, Oklahoma, was tragically cut short. Around 9:15 p.m., the sound of gunshots pierced the night near 56th Street North and Garrison Avenue. In the aftermath, Steven was driven to the OSU Medical Center, suffering from gunshot wounds to which he would ultimately succumb.
His passing was officially announced on August 30, 2021.
The Tulsa community was deeply affected by the violent loss of such a young life. The investigation into the shooting quickly moved forward as law enforcement worked to piece together the events of that fatal evening. Their efforts soon led to a breakthrough in the case.
Investigators identified two individuals connected to the shooting. The first to be taken into custody was 18-year-old Marland Hill. He was apprehended and faced serious charges, including first-degree murder and two counts of shooting with intent to kill. During the investigation, Hill admitted to being present at the scene of the shooting, a key piece of information that helped advance the case. Following Hill's arrest, the investigation continued to unfold, leading to a second arrest on September 9, 2021. Deoyonte Grundy was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder, shooting with intent to kill, and unlawful carrying of a firearm, bringing another suspect to face justice for the untimely death of Steven Garland Sinclair Jr.
