In the winter of 2022, the life of 18-year-old Isaiah Jones, a male, was cut short in a burst of gunfire in north Tulsa. The shooting, which occurred around midnight on January 29th, also left a 17-year-old male seriously injured. A person who knew both victims heard the shots from their home and rushed them to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, Jones succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead.
The surviving victim was treated for his injuries.
The investigation into the deadly shootout quickly led authorities to another 18-year-old, Sir Michael Morgan Jr. It was discovered that Morgan had also been shot during the exchange of gunfire and was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment of two gunshot wounds. Investigators determined that Morgan had initiated the shooting. The motive appeared to be rooted in retaliation, as Morgan believed Jones had been involved in a previous shooting of his friend. The case was handled by the FBI and the Tulsa Police Department and fell under federal jurisdiction because one of the victims was Native American.
In April 2022, a federal grand jury indicted Sir Michael Morgan Jr. for the murder of Isaiah Jones. Initially charged with first-degree murder, Morgan later pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Indian Country in January 2023. The U.S. Attorney's Office highlighted the senselessness of the death, attributing it to gang rivalry and gun violence. In February 2024, Morgan was sentenced for his role in Isaiah Jones's death, bringing a close to the legal proceedings in a case that underscored the tragic consequences of violent street conflicts.
