On April 14, 2010, a heart-wrenching scene unfolded in a Chicago home, forever altering the lives of a Madison, Wisconsin family. Seven-month-old Jihad Larry, a Black/African American male infant, was tragically killed in a mass shooting. The innocent child was not the only victim of the horrific event that claimed multiple lives and left others severely injured.
The violence that erupted that day was not a random act, but rather a familial tragedy that stunned the community.
The architect of this devastation was James Larry, the 32-year-old father of young Jihad. In a brutal rampage, James opened fire on his own family members. Along with his infant son, James killed his 19-year-old pregnant wife, Twanda Thompson, his 16-year-old niece, Keyshai Fields, who was also pregnant, and another niece, 3-year-old Keleasha Larry. The tragedy was compounded by the fact that two unborn children also perished in the attack. Two other family members, James's mother, Leona Larry Burton, and his 13-year-old nephew, Demond Larry, were shot and critically wounded but survived the initial onslaught. Another child present in the home managed to escape unharmed.
Following the shooting, James Larry was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement. He was subsequently charged with four counts of first-degree murder, four counts of attempted first-degree murder, and two counts of intentional homicide of an unborn child. In the aftermath of his arrest, reports emerged that James claimed to have heard voices instructing him to kill his family. His defense attorney stated that he had a history of mental health issues and had been under a doctor's care for eight years. James Larry confessed to the killings, providing a videotaped statement to the police and even leading them to the location where he had discarded the murder weapon. He was ordered to be held without bond and to undergo mental health treatment while in custody.
