In the early morning hours of Friday, June 7, 2024, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace on Williamson Street in Madison, Wisconsin, leaving a young man's life cut tragically short. Alwayne S. Jones Jr., a 27-year-old Black / African American male, was fatally shot around 1:30 a.m. in what law enforcement has described as a targeted incident. The Dane County Medical Examiner's Office later identified Jones as the victim of the shooting that unfolded on the 1300 block of the street.
Responding to the scene, Madison police discovered a chaotic aftermath, with more than 50 shell casings and a weapon recovered. Investigators believe an argument that occurred earlier at the Crystal Corner Bar may have led to the deadly confrontation. The sheer volume of evidence collected at the scene hinted at the intensity of the violence that had transpired. In the weeks that followed, the Madison Police Department launched an extensive investigation into Jones's death. This included the execution of 26 search warrants, which resulted in the seizure of eight illegal firearms, eight vehicles, and numerous electronic devices.
Despite the significant efforts of law enforcement and the identification of persons of interest, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide of Alwayne S. Jones Jr. The investigation remains active, with detectives continuing to pursue leads. In the wake of his death, the community mourned the loss of the young man. A GoFundMe campaign was established by his family to assist with funeral expenses, remembering him as someone "taken from us far too soon" by gun violence. The tragic event marked the second homicide in Madison for the year.
