On August 7, 1977, Alphonse Manning Jr., a 23-year-old Black male, and his 23-year-old white girlfriend, Toni Schwenn, were fatally shot in the parking lot of the East Towne Mall. Their deaths were not the result of a robbery or a personal dispute, but rather a brutal manifestation of racial hatred.
