Darren Lashay Goodwan, a 25-year-old Black / African American man, was a unique and caring individual, known for his devotion to his children and family. He possessed a gentle heart and a wonderful sense of humor, often remembered as the class clown during his younger years. Raised in both Wisconsin and Indiana, Darren had a knack for making lasting friendships and forming brotherly bonds. He was the only son in his family and was deeply protective of his four sisters. His mother, Tasha Goodwan, passed away in 2007, and he shared a wonderful relationship with her. His own life was tragically cut short on August 30, 2014, in Madison, Wisconsin.
In the early morning hours of that late summer day, reports of gunshots in the 700 block of W. Badger Road on Madison's south side brought police to a somber scene. There they found Darren lying in the street. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries around 5 a.m. An autopsy later confirmed that he had died from a gunshot wound. The incident was the third gun-related homicide in the city that year and prompted an emotional response from the city's police chief, who called for a community-wide effort to address gun violence.
The investigation into Darren's death moved forward, and authorities soon sought a person of interest. Subsequently, an arrest was made in connection with the homicide. The loss of Darren left a significant void in the lives of his loved ones. He was remembered as a man who, despite being of few words, had a huge heart and touched the lives of many. He was a loving father to his three daughters, Da'shiya, Aubrey, and Olivia, and his protective nature and ability to bring joy to others were cherished by his family and friends. His sisters recalled him as the most loving brother, someone they could always count on, whose very presence could fill a heart with joy.
