On a cold Monday in Racine, Wisconsin, the life of 27-year-old Andrew Lee Jones Jr., a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short. On March 2, 2015, Jones was found deceased inside the apartment he shared with his roommate on 3 Mile Road at Erie Street, having suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. The initial investigation into his death quickly pointed towards his roommate, Jacob Rogers, as the primary suspect.
The motive for the killing appeared to be a dispute over a small
amount of money. The investigation took a significant turn when police discovered that the apartment was equipped with video surveillance, which had captured the entire horrific event. The video footage reportedly showed Rogers firing a semi-automatic handgun at Jones while he was lying on a couch. After initially walking away, Rogers returned and fired more shots. This chilling evidence became a cornerstone of the case against him.
Following the discovery of Jones's body, a manhunt for Jacob Rogers and his girlfriend ensued. During this time, Rogers was active on his public Facebook page, making posts that seemed to confess to the crime. In one post, he wrote, “That’s the truth. I DID IT,” and appeared to explain his motive by stating, “Stole money n threatened the wrong person. I'll surrender when they find me.” On March 3, 2015, after negotiations with police, Rogers was taken into custody without incident in Racine. His girlfriend was with him and was unharmed.
Jacob Rogers was subsequently charged with first-degree intentional homicide and felon in possession of a firearm. During his initial court appearance, it was revealed that he had admitted to the crime. In February 2016, a jury found Jacob Rogers guilty of both felony charges. He was later sentenced for the murder of his roommate, Andrew Lee Jones Jr.
