In the pre-dawn hours of Saturday, February 26, 2022, the life of Demond Hicks, a 36-year-old Black male from Racine, Wisconsin, was tragically cut short. Officers were dispatched to the area near Victory and Cleveland Street around 3:45 a.m. to find Hicks lying in the street, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was rushed to a local hospital but was ultimately pronounced dead.
Demond Hicks was a man deeply rooted in his community and family.
He was the co-owner of Gifted Hands Group Home in Racine, where he worked to make a positive impact on the lives of children. His family remembered him as a man who genuinely loved people and was, in turn, loved and respected by many. His father, De Andrae Woods, noted that Hicks was turning his life around and making a difference. Known as the family protector, he was a father figure to his fourteen siblings and a loving dad to his own five children—four daughters and a son.
The Racine Police Department is investigating the shooting as a homicide. In the immediate aftermath of his death, his family expressed their profound grief and their desperate desire for answers. His mother, Antoinette Hicks, voiced the pain of not knowing who was responsible for her son's death.
Authorities have urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward and contact the Racine Police Department or Crime Stoppers. To date, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests made or suspects identified in connection with the death of Demond Hicks. The investigation into his murder remains ongoing.
