On a summer evening in Racine, Wisconsin, the life of a White Caucasian male named Quentin Smith, aged 16, was cut tragically short. The date was August 12, 2022, when Smith was found shot in the driveway of a residence near De Koven and Case Avenues around 10:30 p.m. He was immediately transported to a local hospital and then flown to a Milwaukee hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.
The promising young man, who was about to begin his junior year at Washington Park High School, was remembered by his family as creative, smart, and funny.
The investigation into the shooting moved swiftly, and the very next day, police arrested a 15-year-old suspect. The suspect was identified as Zontell Junior, who was charged as an adult with first-degree intentional homicide. According to court documents and witness testimony, the motive for the killing was rooted in a gang dispute. Junior, who was associated with a North Side gang, allegedly targeted Smith because he believed Smith was a member of a rival Southside gang, a claim that Smith's family has disputed.
According to a witness, the events leading up to the fatal shooting began at a nearby house where Smith, Junior, and the witness were together. The witness told investigators that Junior had expressed his intention to shoot Smith. Later, while the three were in the driveway, the witness heard a single gunshot and saw Smith fall to the ground. The witness then saw Junior holding a gun before he fled the scene. Video evidence reportedly showed Junior running to his home after the incident. Following a mistrial in April 2023, a Racine County jury found Zontell Junior guilty of first-degree intentional homicide in July 2023. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison, with the possibility of parole after serving 45 years.
