Gregory Curtis, a 29-year-old African-American male, spent the night of September 17, 1997 at a house on Center Street in Racine where friends had gathered. Before the evening was over, gunfire shattered the ordinary pulse of the block. Officers were dispatched to 1636 Center Street for a report of a person who had been shot. Inside, they found Curtis with a gunshot wound to the head, a single, devastating injury that ended his life before the night could give way to morning.
