In the early hours of New Year's Day 2023, a celebration turned to tragedy inside a Racine, Wisconsin bar, ending the life of 56-year-old Billy Petty, a Black male. The incident, which unfolded at Rerun's Lounge, also resulted in the death of the bar's owner, 66-year-old Avery "Rerun" Stewart.
What began as a festive gathering took a dark turn when a fight broke out within the establishment. The altercation escalated, leading to gunfire.
When police arrived at the scene at 11th and Washington, they discovered both Petty and Stewart had been fatally shot. Investigators were able to utilize high-quality surveillance footage from inside the bar which captured the events as they transpired.
The investigation quickly led to the identification of a suspect, Abdullah Rashada. Police launched a search for Rashada, who was subsequently charged in connection with Billy Petty's death. Following legal proceedings, a jury found Rashada not guilty of first-degree intentional homicide. However, he was sentenced to two years in prison and three years of extended supervision after pleading guilty to a gun felony.
