On the evening of June 18, 2025, Brian Egerson, a 36-year-old Black male from Racine, Wisconsin, was fatally shot following an argument. The incident occurred near the intersection of Marquette Street and Albert Street. Responding to a call about shots fired around 10:19 p.m., Racine police officers discovered Egerson on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Despite life-saving efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the death quickly pointed to a family dispute. Authorities identified the suspect as Brian Egerson's 27-year-old cousin, Terrence Gardner. According to the criminal complaint, the shooting was preceded by an angry exchange between the two men. One witness, reportedly Gardner's mother, told investigators that Egerson had thrown a punch at Gardner just before the fatal shot was fired. Surveillance audio from the area captured the sound of an argument followed by a single gunshot. A. 45-caliber casing and a live round were recovered from the scene.
The day after the shooting, Terrence Gardner turned himself in to the Racine police. He has since been charged with first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of misdemeanor bail jumping. During his initial court appearance on June 24, a judge set his cash bond at $500,000. Family members mourning the loss of Brian Egerson described him as a devoted father and the "protector" of the family, expressing deep shock and grief that his death came at the hands of a relative.
