On January 18, 2023, 25-year-old Gilbert Isaiah Cotton was fatally shot in an apartment near 17th and Packard Avenue in Racine, Wisconsin. The incident occurred around 7:40 p.m., following a domestic altercation involving Cotton and his fiancée.
According to reports, Cotton's fiancée attempted to end their relationship, leading to a physical confrontation. During the altercation, 26-year-old Jimmy J. Mumper, the father of the fiancée's children, intervened.
Mumper, who holds a valid concealed carry permit, drew his firearm and, during the struggle, the gun discharged, fatally wounding Cotton. Mumper claimed the shooting was accidental.
Following the incident, Mumper fled the scene but was apprehended shortly thereafter. He was charged with first-degree intentional homicide using a dangerous weapon by the Racine County District Attorney's Office. During court proceedings, Mumper's bond was set at $250,000.
Cotton was remembered as a 'Jack of all Trades' with a passion for working on cars, both as a mechanic and detailer. He was known for his sense of humor and willingness to help others. His untimely death has left a void in the lives of his family and friends, who mourn the loss of a beloved son, brother, and friend.
