Do you know who killed 47 year old Joseph Walker in 2014? In the early morning hours of Saturday, May 31, 2014, Joseph Walker, a 47-year-old African-American male, was at the American Legion tavern on Douglas Avenue in Racine, Wisconsin. Walker, a father of five, was enjoying the company of friends at the tavern. Just before he had left his home that evening, he told his family he was stepping out for a bit and would be back.
Around 1:30 a.m., two individuals entered the American Legion in what authorities believe was an attempted armed
robbery. One of the suspects was armed with a handgun. During the course of the robbery, at least one shot was fired, which tragically struck Joseph Walker in the head, leading to his death. According to Walker's family, they believe a warning shot was fired first, which unfortunately was the one that hit him.
The two suspects fled the scene and, to this day, have not been identified or apprehended. Law enforcement released descriptions of the two individuals. The suspect with the handgun was described as wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with the hood up, grey sweatpants, white shoes, and had a white cloth covering his nose and mouth. The second suspect was reportedly wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt with the hood also up, a black T-shirt over the sweatshirt, black pants, and white shoes, and also had his face partially covered.
In the years following the tragic event, the Racine Police Department and the FBI have continued to seek information from the public to help solve the case. A reward was offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for Walker's death. As of the three-year anniversary of the homicide in 2017, the case remained unsolved, and authorities renewed their appeal for any information that could bring closure to the family of Joseph Walker.
