Jose Gil-Leon, a 42-year-old White male, died on June 11, 2016, in Appleton, Wisconsin, following a violent confrontation at a gathering at his house. The incident escalated from a verbal altercation to a fatal shooting.
The dispute began after a derogatory comment was allegedly made about Gil-Leon's daughter. This led to a physical fight between Gil-Leon and one of two brothers present at the party, Miguel Zendejas-Cano.
As the victim's daughter attempted to intervene and break up the fight, Miguel Zendejas-Cano is reported to have punched and shoved her. In the midst of the altercation, the other brother, Jorge Luis Zendejas-Cano, shot Jose Gil-Leon.
Following the shooting, a criminal complaint was filed charging Jorge Luis Zendejas-Cano with first-degree intentional homicide. His brother, Miguel Zendejas-Cano, faced charges of battery and several other counts. Authorities in Appleton believed that the two brothers may have fled across the border to Mexico to evade arrest.
