In the early morning hours of October 6, 2019, the life of 45-year-old Debra L. Casey, a White/Caucasian mother of six, was tragically cut short in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Casey was discovered unresponsive in her still-running car near the intersection of 14th and Orchard. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. The events that led to her death began to unfold around 6 a.m., painting a grim picture of her final moments.
A nearby home's security camera captured the chilling prelude to the
shooting. The footage showed a white Buick stopping in the middle of the street. A witness who reviewed the footage stated that it appeared a man in the vehicle was "brutally beating" Casey. Following the assault, the car rolled across the intersection and came to a stop. The man then reportedly exited the vehicle, approached the car, and fired a single shot, killing Casey.
In the days that followed, the Milwaukee Police Department made an arrest in connection with the homicide, bringing a glimmer of hope for justice to Casey's grieving family. The suspect was identified as 26-year-old Trayvonn Brown. He was subsequently charged with second-degree reckless homicide and possession of a firearm by a felon.
According to the criminal complaint, Brown provided his account of the events that transpired. He claimed that he and Casey were together in the car when she attempted to take a bag of crack rocks from him, leading to the vehicle crashing. Brown stated that he got out of the car but realized he had left his cellphone inside. He alleged that when he tried to retrieve it, Casey locked the doors. In what he described as an attempt to scare her, he fired one shot at the car, which ultimately proved to be the fatal one.
Brown's family defended his character, stating that he was not a monster. His sister indicated that he had recently stopped working to help her and her children. Despite his family's pleas, the legal process moved forward, holding Brown accountable for the death of Debra Casey.
