On a summer evening in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the life of 30-year-old Hector Rodriguez Rojas, a Hispanic male, was tragically cut short. On July 29, 2021, at approximately 4:58 p.m., Rojas was fatally shot while riding his moped in the area of 52nd Street and 19th Avenue. Mortally wounded, he managed to make his way into the San Luis grocery store, where he collapsed after asking for someone to call 9-1-1.
He succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Kenosha police quickly launched an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led to the identification and arrest of a suspect. The man taken into custody was Victor H. Ramos. The investigation suggested that the shooting was a crime of rage. According to the criminal complaint, Ramos, driving a Porsche SUV, shot Rodriguez-Rojas multiple times in the middle of the road.
Victor H. Ramos stood trial for the murder of Hector Rodriguez-Rojas. During the six-day trial, the prosecution, led by Kenosha County District Attorney Michael Graveley and Assistant District Attorney Alex Huber, presented what was described as overwhelming evidence against Ramos. In his defense, Ramos claimed he believed Rodriguez-Rojas had rear-ended his vehicle and had threatened him. However, there was no evidence to support a crash or any threats made by the victim. Prosecutors highlighted that Ramos had asked a friend to dispose of the murder weapons and had sent texts to friends saying, "Op got smoked." Ramos's own testimony was reportedly contradictory, at one point claiming self-defense and at another stating he only meant to scare Rodriguez-Rojas.
The jury, composed of seven women and five men, took less than 20 minutes to reach a unanimous verdict, finding Victor H. Ramos guilty of first-degree intentional murder. A conviction for this charge carries a mandatory life sentence.
