In the winter of 2021, a Kenosha, Wisconsin man named TuRando R. Long, a 28-year-old Black / African American male, tragically lost his life in a senseless act of violence. On the morning of January 15th, at approximately 9:15 a.m., Long was walking in his neighborhood near the 2100 block of 61st Street. He was known by his family for enjoying long walks as a form of exercise.
On that fateful morning, a vehicle pulled up alongside him, and the occupant or occupants called him over.
After a brief exchange of words, a suspect inside the vehicle fired a gun at near point-blank range, striking Long. The vehicle then sped away from the scene. Emergency services were called, and Long was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. The incident was described by witnesses as appearing to be a targeted event, with the car seeming to lie in wait for him.
Despite the presence of witnesses to the shooting, no arrests have been made in connection with TuRando Long's murder, and the suspect or suspects remain unidentified publicly. The Kenosha Police Department has continued to investigate the homicide and has appealed to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest. Further complicating the case, some reports indicated that authorities believe Long may have been the victim of mistaken identity. According to his sister, the family was informed that the individuals responsible were from Illinois and were looking for someone else. It has also been reported that the suspected shooter was himself killed in Illinois at a later date, though this has not led to a formal resolution in Long's case. The community continues to await justice for a life cut short.
